Interview with Sam Crocker of Antagonist A.D
New Zealand's Antagonist A.D have been around since 2005 and have been one of the most consistent bands in the hardcore scene. If you've never seen them life, rectify that and if you are not familiar with them, rectify that double time. They are relentless through and through, and some of the nicest people you'll meet. While bands in the scene put out arena rock, pop rock or shoegaze albums, Antagonist A.D have stayed true to their roots, which in this case, is a great thing because they make some of the most pissed off, aggressive and utterly brilliant heavy music you're likely to hear. Sam, their singer answered some questions, and i am stoked he did!
If you had to introduce extraterrestrials to music with only five records, which records do you choose?
At The Gates - Slaughter of the soul
Arkangel - Prayers Upon Deaf Ears
Propagandhi - Todays Empires, Tomorrows Ashes
Hatebreed - Satisfaction is the death of desire
Scribe - The Crusader
Antagonist A.D have been around for a minute, but you still pump out incredible music release, after release. The new EP "Through Fire" is an absolute belter. A lot of bands drastically change or fall off over time but you guys always sound like you, with a twist every now and then. Is it a challenge or is it second nature by now, and how hard is it to stay motivated?
Thank you for the kind description of “Through Fire” - I personally think it is a challenge and it’s second nature. We are very conscious when putting all the pieces together when songwriting - Matt & I will constantly dissect the parts and ask each other questions about why certain bits are there - questions like: what purposes do they serve - what do we want the crowd doing when this part happens - does it sound like us - can we do the same part better. You can end up going around in circles a bit doing that but I think when you have the right motivation it’s constantly exciting and that process is inspiring in itself. It’s nice to get excited about your own music.
I think we have a lot of fire and purpose inside of us musically still and I think until that subsides we stay motivated and excited to keep doing what we are doing.
Are there any bands past or present you wish had more attention?
Arkangel, Brutality Will Prevail, Evil Priest, Antagonist A.D.
Any memorable shows (whether bad or good) you've played, and why?
My favourite all time show was a headline show we did in Slovakia. It was insane to have such a crazy reaction on the other side of the world - it blew my mind and doesn’t even seem real looking back on it. Aside from that particular stand out I literally take a few seconds every single time we play now and soak up the experience. These days they’re all memorable - savour every second we get to share that energy and passion - nothing last’s forever so have to appreciate it while it’s there.
What next for Antagonist A.D? (hopefully this includes an EU tour)
We have two more EPs that should come out this year. We have something planned for Europe in 2020 as well - so spread the word and we will see you soon!
