Interview With Adam Morgan of Hopesfall.
If there were two band that got me into the post-hardcore/emo of the very late nineties/early 00's, it was Thursday and Hopesfall. The way the albums were produced, the arrangements and even the sequencing of their albums just resonated with me. I still love both bands to this day, and i regret selling certain copies of each of their albums, because, fuck flippers.
Straight off the bat, if you were to introduce extraterrestrials to music using only 5 albums, what do you choose?
Nothing too angry or aggressive. I’d want my new alien friends to feel at peace. Something like Converge might elicit a hostile response. So I’d have to go with:
Sigur Rós - Valtari
Hum - You’d Prefer an Astronaut
Phil Collins - Serious Hits Live
Hammock - Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow
Jónsi and Alex - Riceboy Sleeps
The last Hopesfall album "Arbiter" came out in 2018, roughly 9 years after Magnetic North. What was the catalyst of getting back into the studio?
I think the catalyst was a lingering musical/creative itch that we thought we had scratched enough. An itch that went away for awhile while some of us were starting families and careers. Turns out that itch never fully went away, and we all started collectively feeling it again. So we all got back in the studio and gave it a good scratching.
In the post-hardcore scene you've been rather influential." The Satellite Years is one of the genres best albums. Did you think it would have such a lasting legacy when you put it out?
I liked the songs we wrote for the record, and i thought that Hopesfall fans would like the album, but I never thought folks would still be talking about the album 20 years later.
How long have you been collecting records?
About 12 years.
What is your prized possession in your collection?
An original pressing of “The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song” by Cursive on 220 gram white vinyl, limited to 100.
Have you got a white whale you are chasing, or having a hard time finding?
My white whale right now is finding a reasonably priced copy of “Unsolved” by Karate.
Have you guys talked about doing a Hopesfall box set or another reissue of the back cat? Some of the prices are ridiculous, due to flippers. (please say yes! hah).
Never thought about a box set, but there are definitely talks about a repress, but probably shouldn’t say too much right now.
Outside of Hopesfall, what keeps you busy?
Nothing exciting really. 9-5 job Monday-Friday.
Hanging out with my wife and daughter. Riding bikes. Cuddling wiener dogs,
Assuming 2022 let's the world get back to some of "normal", has the band got any plans to tour or record?
We definitely look forward to playing some shows this year, and getting back in the studio is something we are all working toward as well.
Anything you'd like to add?
GO PANTHERS!
