Five For Five With Gordy Forman of Mindsnare & Frenzal Rhomb.
I've actually lost count the amount of times I've seen Gordy play in either Frenzal or Mindsnare. Most recently i saw him fill in with Nursery Crimes opening for The Descendents in Sydney.
Each time I am surprised his drum kit is still in tact. He's easily the best drummer in Australia and a legitimately good dude. After a pretty nasty fall in Perth where he snapped his arm in half, i'm stoked he's back playing, and that he took time out to answer a couple questions. Cheers, Gordy, i hope the shirt fits!
1. If you had to pack up and leave right now with your family, never to return home, what 5 records would you take with you?
Dude, worst question ever! This is fucking impossible to answer, but today, I'd go with the following :
Bad Religion - Suffer
E.L.O. - A New World Record
Beatles - Revolver or the White Album
Mean Jeans - Are You Serious?
Faith No More - Angel Dust
Dopamines - Tales Of Interest
That's six. I was always shit at maths.
2. What album or recording are you most proud of being a part of?
I'm gunna be that jerk and say the last Frenzal and Mindsnare records I recorded.
I tracked the Mindsnare "Unholy Rush" record two weeks before I busted my arm and severed my radial nerve, leaving me without the use of my left arm for nearly 12 months, not knowing if I'd ever play again.
I had Interstate Frenzal shows while the other Mindsnare dudes were tracking their parts, so once we got the final mixes, we were stoked as fuck at the outcome, but we had to sit on it for over a year, because I was out of action and we couldn't play, so as proud as I am of it, it was bittersweet in a way.
Frenzal's "Hi Vis High Tea" is another one I'm super proud of.
Mostly because after all the physio and mental bullshit I went through due to the arm, we somehow managed to make a record that most folk, as far as I've heard, don't completely hate!
It was also fun as shit to make, due to the crew at The Blasting Room, and of course, may mates in the band, being amazing folk.
3. What is a record in your collection no-one would suspect you owning?
Man, I'm nearly 43 and way beyond the "being embarrassed about what I listen to" stage, however, I do get some weird looks when people discover I like The Vengaboys.
4. Favourite & worst show's you've played?
I have a pretty shit memory, but we went to Japan a couple of years ago, and although we've been there heaps before, this time there were actually a couple of hundred people at the shows, so that was sick!
The Melbourne and Sydney Download shows earlier this year were definitely favourites too.
To have been a band for 27 years, who have admittedly put out some pretty shit records, it was fucking humbling to have thousands of people wanna watch us jump around like fuckwits, when they could've been watching way younger, way more popular bands.
Like Anthrax.
5. What is your "White Whale" record you are having trouble getting.
I used to have a list of shit I wanted, but again, at 43, with three midgets, my priorities have changed.
I always wanted a copy of Bad Religion's "Into The Unknown", but my mate Joel who used to play in Jungle Fever hooked me up a few years ago, and I'll forever be indebted to him for that.
Other than that, I don't really give a fuck about pressings and shit like that.
I have a couple of Albert's "Blue Roo" ACDC records that I'm stoked to own, but at the end of the day, it's just stuff.
